Ahhhh... that seems more likely, especially since -batch implies -q.
The system GNUS is the 19.30 version, which would cause headaches with
my .gnus.el.  I'll give that a whack.

Yes.  That was it.  Sadly, however, it appears to be scoring even
non mail groups, even though I did "nnml:all" on the command line.

Dunno what that's about... I'll have to hack later.
